Why I’ll Probably Never Drink Again — And What Finally Changed My Mind

Back in 2002 I attended a Tony Robbins event that has stayed with me far longer than I expected. At the time, he made a statement I completely disagreed with. He said: “People don’t smoke, drink, or binge on junk food because of the thing. They do it because of the feeling they believe it gives them.”

He explained how these behaviours aren’t really about alcohol, cigarettes, or fast food at all — but about the emotional state people are seeking: confidence, escape, comfort, relief, certainty, significance.

I’ll be honest: I dismissed it immediately.

I liked drinking (well I thought I did). I liked the buzz. I liked the looseness, the confidence, the social spark. I thought the feeling came from the alcohol itself. And when he said you could get the same feeling — or even a better one — through healthier habits like training, movement, discipline, or physical challenge?

I thought he was talking nonsense.

Fast-forward to the past year.

More than twelve months without touching a drop of alcohol.

More than twelve months of consistent training — often twice a day.

And I can now say — without hesitation — that the big man was right.

The feeling I get after a training session…
The clarity after a hard workout…
The pride in seeing my body transform week after week…
The deep satisfaction of keeping a promise I made to myself…

All of it feels better than any buzz alcohol ever gave me.

I used to think the “buzz” was the reward.

Now I realise the transformation is the reward.

And that’s why I can say, with complete honesty: I’ll probably never touch a drop of alcohol again.

Because I’ve found something better — a state that I generate, not one I buy.
